Castle films at home
As this ad from 1941 reminds us, long before there was the VHS cassette, serious film fans had those 16-mm reels of "6 great cartoons to select from"..."each a great thrill on your own screen!"
So get out your projector, put up that screen, and make the popcorn. "Let's movie," as they say on TCM.

The sound of the film whirring through the reels is indelible.
I love this ad. If I were a kid back in the day, I would already be filling out the order form and pestering my parents to finance this new collection.
I have one of these Castle films, thanks to my fave husband, who bought one advertised on Kijiji (a Canadian equivalent of Craigslist). I haven't been able to watch the actual reel – a Tom Mix flick – but I've been able to see most of it on YouTube. At the risk of sounding like a paid endorsement, I cannot tell you how pleased I am to have this Castle film reel.
Ruth, I believe there are still collectors of the 16mm and 8mm films who are passionate about owning the movies on film reels. I haven't seen any since childhood myself -- neighbors owned them, not my family, and seeing them at elementary school as well where they showed educational films and not Tom Mix. I would have rather seen Tom Mix, I suppose, but I did enjoy seeing just about anything. Like Paddy above, it took only the whirring sound of the projector to excite.
