Robert L. Surtees, Cinematographer - Roadside Marker
Covington, Kentucky does right by its famous sons and daughters. Here, the uncommon tribute of a roadside marker to Robert Surtees, an Academy Award-winning cinematographer.
Actress Una Merkel got the same “star” treatment from Covington in this previous post.
Mr. Surtees began his career as an assistant cameraman to the great Gregg Toland. In the 1930s he worked for a few years in Germany, then returned to Hollywood where over the next several decades his work was nominated 16 times for Best Cinematography for such pictures as “”Okalahoma!” (1955), “The Graduate” (1967), “The Sting” (1973). He won the Oscar for “King Solomon’s Mines” (1950), “The Bad and the Beautiful” (1952), and “Ben-Hur” (1959).
Hurray for Covington for remembering the artists.
I'll join you in that hooray, Jacqueline. What a smart thing to do.
ReplyDeleteYou are in my neck of the woods here, Jacquline. I go to Covington at least once a week and have a very nice time at their drinking establishments. They have those plaques all over the place.
ReplyDeleteCovington, Newport, Cincy, great towns. Nice area.
ReplyDeleteVery nice thing to do, especially for such an esteemed artist.
ReplyDeleteThat's just wonderful! Thanks for a unique and informative post. I love cinematographers! :)
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Laura
