To this day, watching his Belmont win still makes my pulse quicken. Martin Ritt had a real way with the horse (loved "Murphy's Romance," too). Horses + movies = love!FlickChickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17351624749230610755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-78139311776278935532012-05-24T14:00:43.420-04:002012-05-24T14:00:43.420-04:00Page, I'm impressed you're familiar with &...Page, I'm impressed you're familiar with "Casey's Shadow". I don't think it's too well known. "Bad News Bears" is more popular. Matthau has a great face. He reminds me of Spencer Tracy a little, in the sense that you never catch him acting. They used to say that about Tracy, but it's true of Walter Matthau as well. So much fun to watch him.

Too bad your mother won't get see "Hidalgo" covered. I'm looking forward to reading the other entries. Quite a diverse list.Jacqueline T. I'm thrilled that you've deci...Jacqueline,
I'm thrilled that you've decided to tackle an entire week of great "Horse" films. An ambitious endeavor but fun for us.

I haven't seen Seabiscuit or Secretariat which you've covered so beautifully here. I'm a big fan of John and Diane so I hope to see this one some day. I love biopics that stick to facts, as Disney often does.

As for Casey's Shadow. I really had hoped someone would cover it for the Horseathon so I'm glad it got it's due. Thanks for that!
I love Walter Matthau and even though I liked the Bad News Bears a tiny bit more this was still a very entertaining film with Walter doing what he does best. Gripe, complain but make you love him as he eventually lets you get a peak at that huge heart behind his curmudgeon shtick.

I had forgotten all about that being Alexis Smith as the likable owner/breeder.

Thanks for including the tidbit on Alexis, her experience on doing Casey's Shadow.

Looking for your other reviews on Friday. Thanks again for participating.

Oh, My mom is still wound up and shocked that nobody is writing about Hidalgo, her favorite horse film. I told her to write a review herself but she's too shy.
PagePagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15063277863578004836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-57339995640802886302012-05-23T19:39:59.328-04:002012-05-23T19:39:59.328-04:00Interesting, this: "In the 70s I seemed to be...Interesting, this: "In the 70s I seemed to be living in the 40s, but now I can almost get a pang for the time I felt out of step with."

I would say I probably had one foot in both worlds. I don't think I'm particularly nostaligic for the 1970s in terms of missing it, but I am much more familiar with all that went on in terms of popular culture than I am of the 1980s or 1990s. Adulthood tends to speed up our lives and we have less chance to observe and absorb what's going on around us. My mother, who used to tell me in great detail about her teen years in the 1930s, once joked that she could remember virtually nothing of the 1950s because she was busy with small children and up to her neck in diapers.

For us, CW, it was easy to fall in step with past decades when we were younger because the 1970s was also the birth of nostalgia as fad.Jacqueline T. It is the jarring little things like that which take you out of a time and place no matter how much effort has gone into the rest of the creation.

Interesting choice of films that has caused me to examine my personal view of nostalgia. In the 70s I seemed to be living in the 40s, but now I can almost get a pang for the time I felt out of step with.Caftan Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05936895555808823221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-64028883091931551962012-05-21T21:15:33.430-04:002012-05-21T21:15:33.430-04:00Hi, Kim.
