The more dramatic moments you've highlighted are all there, but the book is able to go into more of the prosaic details of traveling from the old man's perspective—trying to find transportation, figuring out what route to take as more towns are occupied, taking care of the children on the road. And a lot of that is actually what makes it so suspenseful.Elisabeth Grace Foleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02073159989691222645noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-81309218019703704842017-05-18T13:33:15.410-04:002017-05-18T13:33:15.410-04:00Thanks for the link to THE PIED PIPER on YouTube, ...Thanks for the link to THE PIED PIPER on YouTube, John, and those other interesting suggestions.Jacqueline T. I have always enjoyed Monty Woolley. I just found the film on youtube and bookmarked it. For anyone interested here is the link https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=the+pied+piper+monty+wooley+movie&view=detail&mid=535E7CC0AEC5FDE150AB535E7CC0AEC5FDE150AB&FORM=VIRE

BTW I don't know if you are limiting your scope of films to classic Hollywood, but the French film Forbidden Games (1952) is an excellent look at a young girl who loses both her parents and is taken in, reluctantly, by another family. Another excellent French film is Louis Malle's Au revoir les enfants. There is also John Boorman's 1987 film Hope and Glory.

John/24Frameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14719659042858962026noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-26362882587039839962017-05-18T09:42:33.143-04:002017-05-18T09:42:33.143-04:00Thank you so much, CW! I am the opposite -- I have never read the book, though like you, I love Nevil Shute and once traveled to Alice Springs, Australia, just because of his book A TOWN LIKE ALICE. And had to take a photo of his plaque on the Writer's Walk in Sydney. I managed to read some of his other work -- I remember ON THE BEACH was an assignment in college -- but THE PIED PIPER escaped me. Someday I'll catch up. I hope you can catch up with the movie sometime soon.Jacqueline T. I read of the existence of the movie around the same time, but have never seen it. It is underseen because I never had the opportunity to see it and underappreciated because ... well, never-ending circle.

The adaption sounds as real and sensitive as it could be, and Monty Woolly and Roddy McDowall sound as perfect as I could imagine.

I look forward to your series.
