One of my favorite letter scenes is in Chaplin's "Shoulder Arms" as the soldier who gets no letter from home, but reads along with another (unsuspecting) soldier over his shoulder. I don't know about who wrote the letters, but when I was researching "The More the Merrier" I found a photo of Jean Arthur's "hand/writing" double writing her journal entries with the camera over her shoulder. You can find it here: https://theblondeatthefilm.com/2014/05/01/the-more-the-merrier-1943/ I would love to know more about how the letter writing worked!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-49275214031640701562016-04-14T18:19:24.736-04:002016-04-14T18:19:24.736-04:00I'm sure there are many reasons my grandmother...I'm sure there are many reasons my grandmother loved my father, but her face would glow when she when speak of the penmanship prize he won in Junior High School. It was an engraved pen/pencil set with a leather case. He passed on a pride in handwriting to his children, along with the notion of keeping your shoes shined and tiny, and sitting with your back to the wall when you are in a strange bar.

In 1931's "The Black Camel" Inspector Charlie Chan is about to read from an incriminating letter when - ta-dah - the lights go out!Caftan Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05936895555808823221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-65938233083214535602016-04-14T17:23:12.300-04:002016-04-14T17:23:12.300-04:00Thanks so much, friends, for dropping by and shari...Thanks so much, friends, for dropping by and sharing your thoughts on the movie letters. You included many of the same ones, plus others that I omitted like WHITE CHRISTMAS. One of my favorites isn't a classic film but still warrants a mention: 84 Charing Cross.Rick29https://www.blogger.com/profile/08358116647815569722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-85106814911953043982016-04-14T14:51:31.271-04:002016-04-14T14:51:31.271-04:00You know, I also wonder who wrote the letters in f...You know, I also wonder who wrote the letters in films. Whoever they were, they certainly had beautiful handwriting.

As an aside. I find it unsettling that a generation of kids is growing up, unable to read cursive writing. I remember, as a youngster, learning how to write (vs. print), and when I realized I could do it – man, there was no stopping me! I was always writing little stories (and forcing everyone to read them). It was like a rite of passage in a way. I felt so grown up!

Anyway, back to movie letters, I think my fave is the "Dear John" letter Bogart receives in Casablanca, with the rain causing the ink to run. It always tugs at my heart a little, each time I see it.Silver Screeningshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04955048716754142299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-66312855773232068502016-04-14T08:53:44.576-04:002016-04-14T08:53:44.576-04:00While I know about schools not teaching cursive wr...While I know about schools not teaching cursive writing any longer, I still find it unbelievable that it is no longer being taught. I really do not understand the reasoning behind it. Anyway, fascinating article. Letters in films can express so much and truly can move the story in a variety of directions.
