I'm sure most musical lovers probably knew that this was to be a sequel to On the Town but I didn't.

I really enjoyed your discussion on CinemaScope as well. You toughed upon Gene's professionalism. his need to get every choreographed piece perfect. I can't imagine what it would have been like being directed by him. I'm sure it was quite intimidating and frustrating for the lesser talented. Although I look at Cyd as one of the better dancers to come out of Hollywood.

A brilliant review. Jacqueline. I really enjoyed it. I'm a devoted fan of the film and agree that it has greater value than some of Kelly's better known films. I didn't know it had originally been intended to follow up "On the Town" - and, in its way, it does. Dolores Gray is sensational here - I've noticed her only in this film and "Designing Woman" and have no idea why she didn't appear in more films. The Lady Evehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11963115499930520653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092350404895325373.post-65441308715793069672012-08-21T19:34:01.150-04:002012-08-21T19:34:01.150-04:00Welcome, Madam. I especially liked your emphasis on the theme of postwar disillusionment expressed in the movie and how this looked forward to the more serious musicals to come. I also liked your thoughts on using the CinemaScope format for a musical like this. You can see how it benefited the larger-scale, location-shot musicals of a few years later. But I thought you made some good points about the challenges of using it in this film. I find Michael Kidd not so compelling as an actor, but as you point out Dan Dailey IS a compelling actor (he's someone I've just really become aware of recently), and he makes up for Kidd's lack of charisma.R. It's a feeling I get from his performances that I've never been able to put into words.

The last time I watched "It's Always Fair Weather" was a few months ago at my local laundromat. That number in the restaurant (He's a hick...He's a jerk...) impressed both a senior gentleman who used too much fabric softener and a young lady who actually finished stopped talking on her phone to watch. The number touched them because it was very real, very true. Interestingly, Andre Previn, the composer of the score, suggested that the film might have stood up better if it were made a straight drama and not a musical. I disagree, as "darker" moods and themes proved successful in stage musicals in later decades. Perhaps the musical at this stage was just too locked into the boy-meets-girl routine.Jacqueline T.
