Easter Sunday 1958 and Live TV

A rainy Easter afternoon, 1958, and live TV from New York City on the Dumont network. This is in several parts, so if you get hooked on this tidbit, and part 3 below that, you’ll have no trouble being led down the bunny trail to the others.

I’m not sure what’s funnier, a rain-canceled Easter parade that wasn’t, a nervous host’s struggling to fill LIVE air time, or a snippy Hildegarde consenting to be interviewed in her Easter ensemble.

Hoo, boy, Jacqueline.

Maybe it was the setting and the dismal day that Easter, but I've never seen more flop sweat in my life than the vibe streaming off that host. Poor guy. Hildegarde was NOT nice to him either. Someone should have taken pity on the poor schlub of an emcee and played the piano, or done card tricks.

Not to appear "agist" or anything non-PC, but I realize that it may be that it was a more formal time, and people may have seemed older than they were, but did you have the impression that no one under the age of fifty was staying at the Gotham Hotel that day?

Yikes. I would have headed for the hotel bar pronto.

"Flop sweat". You crack me up. I didn't want to put a downer on anyone's holiday, but I think it's the very dismal atmosphere of this well-intended Easter television special that I found hilarious. Who'd have thought a chanteuse in an Easter bonnet could be such a bulldog?

I'm not sure if the crowd was older, or just getting older by the minute with the omnipresent sense of dread.

I'll be you had headed for the bar, you'd probably find it crowded with other escapees.
